Sam's Hiking chair

A couple weeks ago Mike made a hiking chair for Sam. We love to go on family hikes. Sam needed something that he could fit in so Mike got his inspiration from an unlikely source. These are Mike's own words.
Here's Jack Huff, the man who built the lodge on
Mount LeConte, in the Smokey Mountain National Park.
He once carried his mother up the mountain,
while she sat in this chair strapped to his back.
This photo was the inspiration for Sam's new Backpack
Chair. I've been up Mount LeConte 10 times and would
like to carry Sam up there like this............
but it better happen soon.
That little rascal weighs about 40 pounds now
and I'm not getting any younger!
This weekend we finally got a chance to try Mike's backpack chair out. Sam LOVED IT!!!

Ben's Eating

Dad works such long hours and so hard to make sure all his family is taken care of. He had a couple hours of work he had to do so the rest of us decided to watch Sam's movie, Astro Boy, together. We are so grateful for all Dad does. He sacrifices so much for us. Dad is our HERO!

I want to share a little about Ben today. He is such a delight!

Ben always tries to get the special attention of his older brothers. He loves those big boys and they love him. This weekend he got to spend very special time with Axel and Brandon. He watched a movie with Axel (they watched together in a brother hug). Ben sat on Brandon's legs during Stake conference. Unfortunately they fooled around a little but it was neat for Ben to get so much attention. Brandon loved it too although he would not admit it....you know, 15 year old boys have to seem cool at all times.

Ben has also made huge progress in his eating habits. He is overcoming step by step his mental blocks where food is concerned. I will share some examples that give us great hope!

A month back we went to a wedding. There Ben chose his food at the buffet line. He chose his regulars...crackers, cheese, and lots of cookies and cake. He also chose something very unusual, spring rolls. He had to eat all the food before the desserts. When he took a bite of the spring rolls he could not stop raving about how good they were and that he wanted to have them for breakfast also!
He then asked;
Ben: What is in this mom?
Mom: It is lots of little stuff Ben.
Ben: Is it vegetables?
(when Ben asked this he had already eaten 80% of the spring roll and loved it)
(What was I to say? The truth was my only option.)
Mom: Yes Ben it has carrots, and lots of other vegetables. Isn't it yummy?
Ben then immediately put it down and almost threw up. What saved the day was that I then had a talk with Ben and showed him how it was all in his mind. His taste buds had loved the spring roll before he knew what it was. Ben could not deny that. So he asked if he could leave the spring roll that he had almost finished and start a new one where he could not see what was inside. You must understand that I just chuckled. But after getting permission he ate the next one just never once looking at it. Success at last!!!!

Now Ben has eaten what the rest of the family eats a couple of times. He eats normal chicken now. A full meal with no special menu for Ben. He drinks a full glass of milk every morning. He will still argue and try to get out of it but he now has a better attitude that it is not just about trying new foods but about actually eating new foods and moving on to the next challenge. Mike and I are so happy that Ben is maturing and overcoming his blocks.

Nana Adventures

Areos, Ashly, and I spent a couple of days with Nana during Spring Break. Since we did not give her much of an advance warning that we would be there Nana had to work. On Tuesday we first went to visit Grandma Shontz then we drove home to a "green mole" dinner I cooked for everyone. It was nice to see grandma Shontz and spend some time with her singing oldies but goodies.

This visit to St. Louis was really a treat for me because I got to wait for my husband to arrive home from work and greet him at the door. This was the first time in our marriage that I was so blessed to eat dinner with my husband for a whole week and enjoy the evenings with him. I was so happy!

While we were at Nana's we watched allot of TV. The kids really enjoyed that. Thank you so much Mom for making us welcome and being so wonderful to be around.

At the end of that visit we attended the St. Louis Temple with Nana. It was a very special experience to be there and sit together through a session. I will always remember our first Temple visit together.

In January Nana came and spent a weekend with us. We enjoyed her visit so much. Sam was thrilled cause Nana brought him a special gift for having gotten potty trained. She gave him a kaleidoscope. It was Awesome!!!!

Mundy Spring Break

During spring break Areos, Ashly and I went to St. Louis for the week. We spent a couple of days with Grandpa & Grandma Mundy . We had a super time with Grandma Mundy and baby Logan. He is such an adorable chunk!

I made a special Mexican dinner for the family, "albondigas". It was a terrific surprise to have Tiffany, Vicky and David all come to dinner. I hope everyone liked it! We then got a super treat when Jesse also arrived in his ambulance with his partner. After eating he then showed us all the inside of the ambulance and even performed a mini EKG on the kids and Mike. We were so impressed with the siren. It was Super!!!

Grandpa Mundy took us to the Magic House. Both kids had a blast learning and playing. We spent easily over three hours there, it was such a treat for us. Thanks Grandpa and Grandma Mundy!

I even got a special gift from Grandma Mundy, A NEW RED BIKE! I love it. I need to get a picture but believe me it is perfect!!!! Thank you Mom!

Sam's school

We felt truly blessed that Mike had taken two days off to spend with our kids. On Tuesday he first went to lunch with Ben at his school. Ben was so excited to eat with his Dad. Then we went to see Sam's school to have a look at Sam's routine. It was an indescribable feeling for us both. As we saw Samuel walk with his cane and go through his therapy our hearts filled with pride for our valiant little boy. He is so good natured and courageous. He was thrilled to show off for us. We had one of those moments that make parenthood well worth all! Dad then took Ashly to the special Daddy Daughter Snowball, but that is for another story.

Brandon's escapades.

Brandon's toilet moment & wishing he was a little one again. He is a funny guy!
Okay, I am sure you want to know what the toilet moment is all about. We went for a drive after Sunday dinner at friends house. This weekend our city had spring cleaning and we were all excited to see what things people had set outside that they no longer wanted. As we exclaimed over junk, and one or two treasures we found a toilet that we just could not pass up. It was so disgusting looking that we stopped and Brandon jumped out to immortalize the moment. To our dismay the owners of the house came out and at first we thought they would be angry but they were laughing along with us. It was a family memory moment!

Weekend Bike Ride

We went on a family Saturday bike ride. The coolest part was just hanging out with two of our kids. I love the time that we can spend with our children. Whether it is just riding our bikes, throwing a Frisbee, sharing a subway sandwich, or just fooling around, I love every moment. I am truly blessed to have these little ones in my life and to share it all with the most amazing partner, my husband Michael!

Grandpa and Grandma Mundy gave me a super flaming red bike last time we went to visit them. I love it! Now I get to go out and have fun and get some much needed exercise to boot. THANK YOU BOTH SO MUCH!!!

Areos 13th Birthday

Areos turns 13....... a teenager. We now have officially three teenagers. Will we survive? Areos pulled all his monetary gifts together from Nana, Grandpa and Grandma Mundy and Mom and Dad he then borrowed the rest from his parents promising to pay us back by the end of the month. Next Areos went online and looked up on Craigslist Ipod touch. He and I found several, we then emailed and sent texts to those that were the least expensive. When we got a response Areos then called the man and negotiated the price. I was so proud of him. It was a real lerning experience to deal with an adult on an adult level. He did it though and got the man down to a price that Areos could pay by pulling his resources. I drove his to pick up is Ipod and thus Areos obtained one of his dreams. He thought it was not possible because of the cost but he learned that where there is a will there is a way.

Thank you Nana, Grandpa & Grandma Mundy, Mom & Dad for making this possible.

I am also proud of my boy because he went to work immediately and has already paid us back the difference that we lent him.

Happy Birthday Areos, you are a gift to me from Heaven.

Sam's Pinata

I made a Pinata for Sam's birthday party. It was more work than I bargained but it turned out GREAT! Areos helped a little, Brandon finished decorating three of the peaks as I scrambled to set everything else up for our guests. As all of the kids swung the stick to break the pinata and Sam swung with all his might I knew it had been a huge success.

Sam's Birthday #1

Sam had a wonderful birthday party. He received many presents. He had all his friends over and even had a pinata. He was so funny with his cake. Sam is such a ham, he wanted to show off the cake that Areos baked for him. Ashly had decorated it and Sam wanted us to take a picture.
(Aros had his friends over for his own Birthday party. Areos turned 13 on the 15th) Two of my boys had a birthday this month.

Sam's Birthday #2

Sam had all his friends from church over for his birthday party. He received lots of neat gifts. Sam was so excited to open them all. Of course Ben wanted to help.
Sam received a super neat gift from Grandma & Grandpa Mundy. Astro Boy! He loved his gift.
Dad and mom gave Sam an awesome robot. I think Dad had as much fun playing with it as Sam did.
Brandon made a very special gift for Sam, he gave Sam a portrait that he drew of Samuel his youngest brother.

Sam's Birthday #3

Nana sent Sam a Batman car with two Batman figures. Sam just loves Batman! Sam and I play for hours with his batman figures. He is always Batman and I am the bad guy, but Sam prefers us to be "On the same team".

Daddy Daughter Ball

Michael took two vacation days so that he could take Ashly to the Daddy Daughter Snow Ball. It was a very special evening. They learned how to waltz and swing dance. I am so happy my little girl has such a wonderful daddy.

Sunday Family Time

Dad and his kids,

with some special sibling moments.
(Isn't my husband so handsome? mmmmm)

Scouts

I went with my two boys, Ben and Areos to the Scout ball. Areos got one of his badges. Mike wanted me to wear his scout shirt since he was not able to be there because of his job in St. Louis. We sure missed Dad with us! Ben was invited because he will be in scouts when he turns 8. We had a great time. Ben was thrilled to be included. I was thrilled to be with my two handsome boys!
